Emergency Physicians of Tidewater is
a democratic partnership practicing emergency medicine in a
multi-hospital environment in coastal Virginia. EPT was
established over 30 years ago, and creates a practice environment
that nurtures long, fruitful careers involving opportunities in
every niche within emergency medicine.
The Tidewater area is a great region. The Atlantic Ocean,
Chesapeake Bay and inland waters make your backyard a beautiful
place. The cost of living is very comfortable. The Outer Banks of
NC, Blue Ridge Mountians, Richmond and Washington DC are all
within 3.5 hours drive.
Our hospitals are all within a one-hour drive of each other in
the Tidewater area.
Our oldest contract, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (acquired
in 1968), is a level one trauma center that serves as the primary
teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School (EMVS).
Through EVMS, EPT has developed an Academic Department of
Emergency Medicine, with a fully accredited, 3-year residency in
emergency medicine. The emergency department at Norfolk General is
covered by emergency medicine residents 24 hours/day and is
staffed primarily by the academic partners. The Academic Partners
are responsible for the residency's academic and administrative
functions (lectures, research, undergraduate education, resident
applicant selection, etc). The patient volume at Norfolk General
Hospital is around 45,000/year.
Also in the city of Norfolk is Sentara Leigh Hospital (about
40,000 patients/year), a community hospital seeing moderate to
high acuity medical cases, less trauma, low acuity pediatrics and
GYN. Leigh also has a fast track staffed by the group's physician
assistants.
Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center is another community hospital
in Norfolk that we staff, with a volume of about 34,000/year.
DePaul has similar characteristics to Sentara Leigh Hospital.
Residents in Emergency Medicine from the Portsmouth Naval Hospital
program rotate in the ED at DePaul under our direct supervision.
Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is a couple of miles
from the oceanfront and is a dynamic community hospital that has a
level 2 trauma designation. The patient volume at Beach is
approximately 50,000 patients per year. Our EM residents work with
us at Virginia Beach General Hospital, in addition to physician
assistants in the fast track. Beach General has a busy summer due
to the city's strong tourism trade. Acuity is moderate to high.
Bon Secours Maryview Hospital is the only hospital in the city
of Portsmouth and is also of moderate to high acuity. Maryview
functions efficiently and is an excellent affiliated hospital for
training our residents. The volume at Maryview is growing and will
probably top 50,000 visits this year.
Obici Hospital in Suffolk is a rural community hospital with a
very supportive administration. Patient volume is around 32,000
visits a year.
Our most recent contract is at Sentara Bayside Hospital in
Virginia Beach, which started with EPT in July of 2003.
Bayside sees approximately 40,000 patients each year and has been
a nice addition to the group.
